I want to be an Exercise Science Major
The Exercise Science program prepares students to serve as exercise specialists and allied health professionals in numerous fitness, corporate, clinical, and rehabilitation settings. Students are trained to develop appropriate exercise interventions for both healthy individuals and those with chronic disease.The Exercise Science concentration provides a good background for entry to any number of occupations. Some of these careers include: Exercise physiologist, Cardiac rehabilitation, Exercise/sport scientist, Fitness director, Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Industrial rehabilitation, Corporate wellness director, and Pharmaceutical Sales.

I want to be a Community Health Educator
This program prepares students to assist in the development and maintenance of healthy communities by implementing dynamic health education/health promotion programs across the life span. Upon graduation students are prepared for entry to any number of career opportunities in public health departments, hospitals and clinics, nonprofit agencies, schools and private industry.

I want to be an elementary school teacher - (grades pk-6)
The School of Education at VCU does not offer a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Instead, the Extended Teacher Preparation Program is offered, where students work on a bachelor’s degree in a declared area and subsequently matriculate into a master’s program. Students graduate with an undergraduate and master’s degree simultaneously. Beginning in the fall of 2005, a new bachelor’s degree is being offered for those who want to work with elementary students. This degree is called the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) with a major in Liberal Studies in Early/Elementary Education (LSEE). All incoming freshmen and transfer students are encouraged to declare this degree as a major. I want to be a high school (secondary) teacher - (grades 6-12)
The School of Education does not offer a bachelor’s degree in high school (secondary) education. Instead, the Extended Teacher Preparation Program is offered, where students work on a bachelor’s degree in a declared area and subsequently matriculate into a master’s program. Students graduate with an undergraduate and master’s degree simultaneously. For the high school (secondary) program, students declare an undergraduate degree in the area in which he or she would like to teach—math, science, English, or history/social studies. The Virginia Dept. of Education requires high school (secondary) teachers to have a major or a major equivalency to teach at this level.

I want to be a special education teacher - (grades K-12)
The School of Education does not offer a bachelor’s degree in special education. Additionally, the Master’s of Teaching (MT) for special education is in the process of being phased out. However, the School of Education at VCU does offer a Master’s of Education (MEd) in five special education concentration areas: learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, severe disabilities, early childhood special education, and mental retardation. All applicants for these program concentrations must have an earned bachelor’s degree.
