Eight VCU School of Education students were among the chosen few in Virginia to attend the 2009 Teachers of Promise Institute in Harrisonburg, Va.
Sponsored by the Virginia Milken Educators Network, the James Madison Center, and the James Madison University College of Education, the annual institute offers exemplary pre-serve teachers a quality professional development opportunity.
Representing VCU at the March 20-21 event were Diane Colorafi, Dalila Cresswell, Jessica Drahms, Leah Farnham, Jennifer Fisher, Ketia Ingram, Talia Jones, and Amy Musselman-Gray.
Selection as a Teacher of Promise is an honor. Participants are selected by their individual universities on a competitive basis and represent Virginia's most promising and gifted pre-service educators. They exhibit a strong commitment to the teaching profession and exemplify the traits necessary for a truly exemplary career in public education.
At the Teachers of Promise Institute, each participant is assigned a mentor who works with them throughout the weekend and continues to serve as a source of advice, assistance and guidance to help them make a successful transition to the classroom. Students have the opportunity to attend practical, quality workshops and have opportunities to meet with award-winning educators.
VCU School of Education Doctoral Candidate and Milken Family Foundation Educator Award recipient Joshua Cole served as a mentor for Talia Jones and other students across the state.
Department of Teaching and Learning Assistant Professor Tammy M. Milby, Ph.D., was the VCU Institutional Representative.
The event’s keynote speaker was Jo Lynne DeMary, Ed.D., director of the VCU School of Education Center for School Improvement and a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership.
Among the presenters at the student workshops were VCU alumni and Milken Educators Stephanie Bishop (post master’s certificate ’06) and Laura Lay (M.Ed. ’99).
