The VCU School of Education honored 43 Richmond-area teachers who achieved certification from the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards in 2008.
The teachers from the City of Richmond, Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico counties received pins from their local school superintendents to recognize the culmination of their year-long certification process.
At a ceremony in VCU’s W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, keynote speaker Governor Timothy M. Kaine thanked the teachers for their commitment to education.
“We all want to be better at what we do, but the fact that you have taken this extra step for your students and colleagues is impressive,” said Kaine. “On behalf of seven-and-a-half million Virginians, I want to say thank you and congratulations.”
Kaine was introduced by VCU President Eugene P. Trani, Ph.D., who congratulated the teachers for completing a very rigorous certification program.
“There is no more important calling than teaching,” said Dr. Trani. “It is important that all of our school divisions have strong role models.”
National Board Certification is a voluntary professional development process that recognizes accomplished teachers who meet rigorous standards of performance. Offered through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, a nonpartisan, independent, and nonprofit organization, National Board Certification complements, but does not replace, state licensing. It is an advanced professional certification used by states and local communities as a way to identify and reward exemplary teachers. A National Board Certificate attests that a teacher has met the highest standards established for the profession.
The pinning ceremony is sponsored by the Metropolitan Educational Training Alliance, a partnership of Richmond area schools and the VCU School of Education.
“The Metropolitan Educational Training Alliance is one of the most outstanding partnerships in education,” said School of Education Dean Beverly J. Warren, Ed.D., Ph.D.
