Oldaker-Schiltz receives national health educator award

VCU School of Education alumna Kay Oldaker-Schiltz has been named “Health Education Professional of the Year” for K-12 category, by the nation’s largest professional membership association for health educators.

Ms. Oldaker-Schiltz, a Health and Physical Education instructor at Carver Middle School in Chesterfield County, Va., will receive the coveted award this monthat the American Association for Health Education’s national convention in Utah. The association supports educators and other professionals who strive to promote the health of all people.

The annual award is presented to one person who has made a substantial contribution as a practicing professional in the health education field, and recognizes those who exemplify the association’s vision of enriching the depth and scope of health-related activities in schools and promoting universal health. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of experience in their field and demonstrate leadership, volunteerism and service to the profession.

Ms. Oldaker-Schiltz’s 17-year teaching career is marked by leadership, philanthropy, civic activism and a strong research drive. During this time she has published articles on the use of heart-rate monitors in the classroom; obtained $18,000 in grant funding; and earned the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year award in 1999 and 2002, Virginia Health Teacher of the Year award in 2004, and Southern District Health Teacher of the Year award in 2005.

She also has made several state and regional presentations; is Past Vice President of the Virginia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s health division; was a member of the writing team for the Virginia State Health Standards of Learning in 2001, and was sought for consultation by the American Heart Association on instructional materials.

Ms. Oldaker-Schiltz received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education K-12 from VCU in 1979 with endorsements in first aid and driver’s education.

She is married to Jack H. Schiltz, Ph.D., who chairs the School of Education’s Department of Exercise Science.
