Four Richmond area school principals are the recipients of a new award recognizing principals who go beyond the day-to-day demands of their position to create an exceptional educational environment.

Recipients of the 2005 R.E.B. Awards for Distinguished Educational Leadership Awards with their respective school superintendents. The awards were announced in a ceremony at the Lois E. Trani Center for Life Sciences. From left: John Titus, Billy K. Cannaday, Paul Vecchione, Stewart D. Roberson, Pamela Bell, Frederick S. Morton, Deborah Jewell-Sherman, and J. Austin Brown.
John Titus with James River High School in Chesterfield County, Paul Vecchione with Patrick Henry High School in Hanover County, Pamela Bell with Jacob Adams Elementary School in Henrico County, and J. Austin Brown with Huguenot High School in the City of Richmond were selected from 43 principals nominated for the 2005 R.E.B Awards for Distinguished Educational Leadership Awards.
The awards are funded by the Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia in partnership with the R.E.B. Foundation, and sponsored by Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Education.
They were presented by School of Education Dean William C. Bosher, Ph.D., and Community Foundation president Darcy S. Oman, in a ceremony at VCU’s Eugene P. and Lois E. Trani Center for Life Sciences. More than 100 people attended the event.

"Educational Leadership has become more challenging with high stakes accountability and visible issues of school safety,” Bosher said after the ceremony. “The R.E.B. awards clearly lift the role and responsibility of those who have done an outstanding job in enhancing the achievement of students in a safe and caring environment."
Principals were nominated by representatives of the Richmond school community and the public based on their ability to:
- effectively promote excellence in education, demonstrate leadership and exemplify commitment
- inspire their students and advocate for their school and faculty
encourage team spirit - foster cooperation between the school and community
maintain dialogue with students, parents, faculty and staff
The four winning principals will receive a $7,500 professional development cash grant, and $7,500 for their school for projects of their choosing.
Finalists were selected by a committee comprised of Bosher, Oman; Richmond community members Rudolph and Esther Bunzl, who established the R.E.B. Foundation in 1988; Chesterfield County Public Schools Superintendent Billy K. Cannaday, Richmond City Public Schools Superintendent Deborah Jewell-Sherman, Henrico County Public Schools Superintendent Frederick S. Morton, and Hanover County Public Schools Superintendent Stewart D. Roberson.
The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia was founded in 1968 to provide stewardship for permanent endowments that enhance the lives of area citizens. It is one of the largest grantmakers in Virginia. For more information on the awards, visit www.tcfrichmond.org/page8759.cfm#REBD
