VCU School of Education Department of Special Education and Disability Policy Chairman John Kregel, Ph.D., has accepted an invitation to join more than 750 of the nation’s recognized experts on social insurance issues and programs in the National Academy of Social Insurance.
“I extend my congratulations to you on your selection to membership,” academy president Jerry L. Mashaw said in a letter of acceptance to Dr. Kregel.
Dr. Kregel is one of 59 new members announced by the academy. Those selected for membership distinguished themselves by improving the quality of research, administration, or policymaking in those areas. Members volunteer their time to work on study panels, committees, conferences and other Academy projects.
“The academy has been very influential in shaping the discussion of current issues such as privatization of Social Security and prescription drug benefits under Medicare,” said Dr. Kregel. “My selection reflects the national recognition VCU has recently received for our work in these and other areas.”
Prospective members are nominated by current members and screened by an 11-person membership committee, which then makes recommendations to the academy's board of directors. The committee also proactively seeks individuals from under-represented fields and recommends them for membership.
The National Academy of Social Insurance is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that promotes understanding and informed policy-making on social insurance and related programs through research, public education, training, and the open exchange of ideas.
Social insurance protects workers and their families against economic insecurity caused by loss of income from work and the cost of health care.
The academy’s scope includes Social Security, Medicare, workers’ compensation, and unemployment insurance. It takes no positions on legislative proposals, but tries to improve the debate by highlighting the latest research and areas where experts agree.
