Three associate deans and two retiring faculty members were honored for their achievements and service to Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Education.

VCU School of Education Dean William C. Bosher, Ph.D., thanks the associate deans and retirees for their service at a ceremony in the Scott House.
In a ceremony at VCU’s Scott House, Associate Dean for Student Affairs Diane J. Simon, Ph.D., was honored for her efforts to bring the school’s Student Services Center together under one roof, hiring a director for the center, and implementing the new December graduation program.
Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs Beverly J. Warren, Ph.D., was recognized for breaking new ground in the area of faculty development and continuing to teach during her two years in the dean’s office. Warren will return to the faculty in fall 2005 as professor and chair of the Department of Exercise Science.
As associate dean, Warren worked with probationary faculty in research and professional development, worked with adjunct faculty in orientation sessions and daily interaction, revised tenure and promotion guidelines, and recruited many new faculty. Warren also has worked on two key committees over two years regarding faculty evaluation.

Also returning to the faculty this fall is Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Michael D. Davis, Ph.D., who will become professor and chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning. In his three years in the dean’s office, Davis implemented a 22 percent budget cut without termination of any faculty or staff members, increased staff compensation, and coordinated the move of professors in the Franklin Street Gym to Oliver Hall.
Davis also was recognized for his commitment to quality, and to faculty and student excellence. As senior associate dean, he continued to teach and chair many doctoral committees.

Retiring longtime faculty honored at the ceremony included Rosemary Lambie, Ed.D., a professor of Education and Disability Policy in the Department of Educational Leadership. Lambie has been teaching at VCU since 1978. She also has served as Interim Division Head of Education Studies. “It’s been a very big gift to share a life with my students,” said Lambie.
Department of Recreation, Parks and Sports Management Chair Michael S. Wise, Ph.D., is retiring after 33 years at VCU. Wise was recognized for being indefatigable in his professional ethics and for taking extra time to help students. Wise says he has been asked several times what he plans to do in his retirement. “I tell them ‘are you serious? My profession is leisure’.”
