Retracing the JourneyProfessor Leila Christenbury, Ed.D., has received two national awards for her book Retracing the Journey: Teaching and Learning in an American High School, which chronicles her experiences upon returning to teach high school after a hiatus of many years.

The book received awards from the National Council of Teachers of English: the 2008 James N. Britton Award, which is sponsored by the NCTE's Conference on English Education to encourage English Langauge teacher development; and the 2008 David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in Teaching, which is among the most presitgious of NCTE awards.

The compelling narrative is a continuation of Dr. Christenbury's earlier book Making the Journey and resonates with those conerned about the state of today's American secondary education.

Dr. Christenbury is a veteran high school English teacher and Professor of English Education in the VCU School of Education's Department of Teaching and Learning. She is the former editor of the NCTE's English Journal and a past president of the organization.
