Teresa (Terry) Carter, Ed.D., graduated from George Washington University with a doctorate in Executive Leadership in Human Resource Development in 2001. Dr. Carter assumed her position at Virginia Commonwealth University as Coordinator of the Adult Learning Program in January 2005. Her prior teaching experience included serving as adjunct faculty in George Washington University's HRD master's degree programs in Richmond and in Washington, D.C. and in VCU's Adult Education and HRD program. She has taught master’s and doctoral level coursework in adult learning theory and practice, organization development, human resource development (HRD) interventions and strategies, consulting skills, group and team development, and organizational learning.

Since assuming her role at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Carter has revised the master’s degree program in Adult Education and HRD to become the M.Ed. in Adult Learning. The new program features a strong core curriculum in adult learning and elective tracks in one of three areas: Human Resource Development, Adult Literacy, and Adults with Disabilities.

Prior to her academic career, Dr. Carter spent 20 years working as an internal and external consultant on issues of organizational learning and change, leadership, and team development in both public and private sector organizations. From 1990 to 2000, she was the senior organization development consultant at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. She has experience in facilitating large, whole system interventions as well as personal development programs.

Dr. Carter's research interests are in transformative learning among professionals in the workplace and on learning through developmental relationships, including mentoring. Her dissertation research explored the learning experiences of midcareer women in developmental relationships.

She continues to study the relational aspects of learning in the workplace and transformative learning among medical educators in the academic setting. Dr. Carter lives in Richmond, Virginia with her husband and two golden retrievers in Chesterfield County. Her hobbies include dog training, including therapy dog work, gardening, and travel.
