“The Grant program has been a blessing to me and my career.  First of all financially (what better way to get a Masters) and right along with that all the support that comes along with the program. Books, seminars and conferences; speakers who otherwise would cost hundreds of dollars to go see elsewhere and the staff is dedicated to helping us succeed. The classes have added so much to me as a teacher, and the information is useful right away.  You don't have to wait to add to your teaching repertoire.  Being part of the grant program has been a wonderful experience.”

"The grant program has been an answer to a prayer.  I had begun a different program in the fall of 2002, and had taken one class.  My husband was diagnosed with cancer, and that put my program on hold for almost 2 years.  After much personal debate, and a lot of prayer, this grant program popped up on my school computer.  I was able, with Dr. Sutherland's guidance, to switch programs.  I am learning a great deal from the classes I have had so far.  And one of the best things I can say is that I have met some very interesting, caring, and dedicated teachers that are among the best in the metro area. "

"After having to take a medical leave from the M.Ed. Program at VCU, I was unsure if I would ever complete my master’s degree.  Having the responsibility of a 2 year old...financially, I wasn't sure if I would be able to afford to get my degree.  Thanks to this program, I am able to complete my degree on a schedule that's beneficial to me, and since it is a grant program, this program made it financially possible.  Professionally, I have taught students with Emotional Disturbance throughout my teaching career without the endorsement needed on my license due to the "multi-categorical classroom” I teach.  I can now better teach these students because of the knowledge I have gained from these classes and the degree, as well as the endorsement, which I will receive after the completion of this program. "

"The grant has offered me a chance to finish getting my Masters of Education with an emphasis in emotional disturbance from VCU in one year.  I would not have been able financially to work on a new teacher’s salary and afford classes, too. I am a career switcher from computer programming to high school Math with my endorsement in special education/ emotional disability. I started my transition through Henrico County schools in the Metropolitan Educational Teaching Association (META) program. This program allowed me to take the necessary classes for my state license. This program, in conjunction with VCU Personnel Preparation Grant, allowed me 16 credits towards my masters if I continued with the program. When I finished the META program the grant was looking for students. WOW, what luck!  The grant has allowed me to finish my masters and has allowed me to make new friends that are priceless. Through the program I was able to choose my mentor, and I am making time to get the help I need to be a better teacher. The journals are great, and the newsletters through the CEC and CCBD have a lot of great ideas and research-based teaching strategies that have improved my teaching skills."
