The Exercise Physiology Laboratory
The Exercise Physiology Laboratory is housed in a nearby off-campus facility in metro Richmond, the laboratory includes two Exercise Science Faculty members, as well as Affiliate Faculty from Surgery, Pediatrics, and Psychology. The laboratory contains equipment related to both applied physiology and biochemistry applications.
The Exercise Physiology Laboratory is located at 3600 W. Broad Street, Suite 350. The laboratory includes a 1400 sq. ft. human performance laboratory, 200 sq. ft. biochemistry and blood preparation laboratory, 800 sq. ft. body composition laboratory, a 2000 sq. ft. exercise room, and three 120 sq. ft. office spaces. The laboratory contains equipment related to both applied physiology and biochemistry applications. The equipment in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory includes a Sensormedics VMax Encore 29 metabolic cart with integrated Cardiosoft Electrocardiography, Tango blood pressure, and oxygen saturation modules, a Jeager Portable oxygen analyzer, two Trackmaster treadmills, one Monark cycle ergometers, one Monark anaerobic (Peak) cycle ergometer, one Medgraphics cycle ergometer, one Monark arm ergometer and a Racermate Computrainer Pro. The lab also contains a Biopac Systems MP150 data acquisition system with non-invasive cardiac output, heart rate, and blood pressure modules and a Hokanson AI6 strain gauge plethysmography unit for assessment of vascular function. The body composition laboratory houses both a GE Lunar NT+ and a GE iDXA Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) system for body composition. The biochemistry and blood preparation laboratory houses a Genesys 2 Spectrophotometer, a YSI 2300 STAT Plus Glucose and Lactate Analyzer, two Lactate Scout lactate analyzers, a Bayer Healthcare Rapidpoint 405 blood gas analyzer, a BioRad 96-well plate reader and washer, an IEC Centra CL3R Thermo Centrifuge, a Biorad gel electrophoresis system, Millipore Elix 3 water purification system, a Revco Legaci -80°C Freezer, a Fisher Isotemp 2025 waterbath, and a Denver Instrument Company scientific scale. The exercise room houses 4 treadmills, 3 cycle ergometers, 1 elliptical trainer, Nautilus resistance training equipment, and miscellaneous free weight equipment.
