The Center for School-Community Collaboration's training emphasizes community team efforts, and it provides follow-up technical assistance for parent, school and community groups. Over the years, the Center has provided statewide trainings, workshops, seminars and conferences on several youth-related issues. In addition to statewide trainings, the Center has also provided individualized sessions for several school and community groups throughout the State of Virginia. If you would like to know more about what we have to offer, please contact Lynn Thorpe at 804-827-2613.

"Positive Ways to Improve School Attendance"
Truancy Institute will be held on September
20-21, 2005 at the Double
Tree Hotel located in Charlottesville, VA
Sponsored by the Virginia Department of
Education, Office of Student Services in cooperation with Virginia Commonwealth
University, Center for School-Community Collaboration
School truancy has become a persistent problem in our schools. According to the U.S. Department of Education, truancy is "the most powerful predictor of juvenile delinquent behavior." While truancy is not a crime, it is a status offense, much like being a runaway. Former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley once noted: "Truancy is the first warning sign we have that a young person may be giving up hope." (School Administrator, April 2003)
Topics covered :
This conference was conducted especially for school personnel, court services personnel and individuals in communities who work with schools to prevent truancy problems. The conference was sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Student Services.
Critical Incident Stress Management
Last year the Center completed two-day trainings on Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Education, Office of Compensatory Programs and the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services.
Three sets of trainings in March 2002 proved very successful in Fairfax, Virginia Beach and Roanoke. Participants in attendance included professionals from the areas of healthcare, counseling and rehabilitation services.
The two more recent CISM trainings were offered to school counselors in August, 2002, in Culpeper and Williamsburg. These trainings were very well received and an evaluation of the program shows that participants found the training to be a useful asset to their knowledge base.
Our hope is to receive additional funding in the near future to allow us to take this training on the road again to other areas in the Commonwealth.
Please bookmark this site and check back with us periodically. Information on additional training topics will be posted as soon as they are available.
