CDC Curriculum

The CDC curriculum is defined at the VCU CDC as everything children experience throughout their day - from "hello" to "have a good night".

Our teaching staff are qualified early childhood educators who are dedicated to providing high quality care and education of young children. Each room has two co-teachers who design individualized learning experiences that promote emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development for each child. The program has support from a director, associate director of family services, curriculum specialist, program specialist, assistant program specialist, cook, assistant cook, in addition to a variety of VCU and community resources.

Each classroom offers an environment with centers designed to offer learning opportunities that are fun and engaging for young children. Children learn through play experiences!

Al's Pals: Kids Making Healthy Choices (designed as an effective program by the United States Department of Education)

Al's Pals curriculum offers effective strategies to teach children how to get along with others, manage anger, problem solve, use self-control, and make healthy choices. Research conducted over a 5 year period at Virginia Commonwealth University shows that children who received Al's Pals made significant gains in positive social skills. Children who did not receive the program did not make these gains, with many actually displaying more aggressive and anti-social behavior over time.

A puppet named Al and his pals, Ty and Keisha, engage children in learning to...

  • Express feelings appropriately
  • Care about others
  • Make and keep friends
  • Stop and think
  • Gain self-control
  • Solve problems peacefully
  • Use kind words
  • Cope with difficulties
  • Keep themselves safe and healthy
