Special Education General Curriculum

COVE (Certifying On-line Virginia Educators)

The COVE program is a licensure endorsement program that leads to professional collegiate licensure through the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) in the area of Special Education, General Curriculum. To be eligible for the program, you must be a provisionally licensed special educator and teaching students with high incidence disabilities in a school located in Region 1, 3 or 8 of Virginia. All 27 credit hours of coursework is done on-line and can be completed part-time in 5 consecutive semesters. Tuition assistance is provided for coursework depending on funding availability from VDOE.

The following are the courses required in the VDOE approved curriculum:

  • Prerequisite: Provisional special education teaching license in Virginia under Special Education, General Curriculum
  • SEDP 501 Characteristics of Students with High Incidence Disabilities (3 cr)
  • SEDP 601 Methods I: Teaching Students in Special Education General Education – Elementary (3 cr)
  • SEDP 602 Methods II: Teaching Students in Special Education General Education – Secondary (2cr)
  • SEDP 531 Educational Foundations for Collaboration and Universally Designed Learning (3 cr)
  • SEDP 533 Educational Assessment of Students with Diverse Learning Needs (3 cr)
  • SEDP 631 Classroom Management and Behavior Support (3 cr)
  • SEDP 611 Secondary Education and Transition Planning (2 cr)
  • TEDU 561 Reading Foundations (3 cr)
  • SEDP 603 Theories, Assessment, and Practices in Reading for Students with High Incidence Disabilities (3 cr)
  • SEDP 502 Supervision Seminar I (1 cr)
  • SEDP 503 Supervision Seminar II (1 cr)
